The 2nd annual Catchin’ Fireflies 5k Run/Walke (formerly Run for the Riedels Lymphomathon) was created by two high school students- Aaron Wollett and Anna Brown. This is a family-friendly 5K Run/Walk to help support the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (LLS). Aaron Wollett originally coined the idea of a 5K in order to help his high school Agricultural Education teacher, Jodi Riedel and her husband (a Heritage High School teacher and coach) with his fight with Lymphoma. The family asked that the money earned from the 5K be used to help to fight against blood born cancers through a donation to the LLS. Here is a message from the Riedel family:
“Jamie Riedel is a husband; father, brother, Heritage High School teacher and varsity lacrosse coach, friend, and Lymphoma survivor. In October 2010, Jamie had a cough that just wouldn't go away. By February, he had been to the doctor every month and was having swelling and even some blueness in his skin color. He was told over and over again it was allergies and he was stressed over. After a simple chest scan, they found a 10 cm mass under his sternum. This was Lymphoma, a blood cancer. Jamie's world and life had changed in just an afternoon. After his diagnosis, he found out he had Hodgkin's Lymphoma, a treatable and highly curable cancer. After six months of brutal chemotherapy and radiation treatments, Jamie lives a healthy lifestyle. Every other Friday, for six months, Jamie endured four hours of dangerous chemicals going into his veins. He was incredibly ill, gained weight (who knew-right?), lost some- not all of his hair, and only managed to miss school for his treatments and doctor's appointments. Jamie had encountered his toughest opponent but was unwilling to let Lymphoma beat him. Throughout this process, Jamie has had an incredible amount of support from his community. Coworkers, lacrosse players and families, friends, and family all rallied together to support Jamie. Today, Jamie wants to keep fighting and kick Lymphoma butt. He hopes to raise money to support and further the efforts of cancer research. His dream is that others will not have to go through cancer treatment without assurance that there is a cure in the end.”
This year, the Catchin’ Fireflies 5K will honor Wakefield High School’s English teacher Heather McDonald. Heather has taught at Wakefield for eleven years and during the summer of 2012, she was diagnosed with Lymphoma. Since her diagnosis, Heather has been bravely battling the blood cancer and is winning. Heather McDonald’s is the Catchin’ Fireflies 5K Honored Hero.
The Race committee consists of Aaron Wollett, Anna Brown, Jodi and Jamie Riedel, and the Wakefield High School FFA.
